Proposed Elimination of Pocket Busing to Joel P. Jensen MS and West Jordan HS

The Jordan Board of Education is considering eliminating the pocket bus area on the west side of West Jordan beginning in the 2024-25 school year. Generally, the area west of Bacchus Highway (U-111) and the area south of Antelope Canyon Elementary School, is pocket bused to Joel P. Jensen MS and West Jordan HS. This proposal, if approved, would move the secondary students in this area to Sunset Ridge MS and Copper Hills HS. Elementary students would be unaffected.

Although the area is growing, it is anticipated that the enrollment at Sunset Ridge and Copper Hills will remain large, but stable.
The maps below show the proposed changes. This boundary change would currently impact fewer than ten (10) students.

Opportunity to provide feedback via survey will be available until 8:00 am on November 1, 2023 and results will be shared with the School Board in the November 14, 2023 Study Session. The survey is available at this link.

Q: Won't the planned development in this area overwhelm Sunset Ridge and Copper Hills?

A: While there is substantial growth planned in this area, demographic shifts and economic uncertainty are combining to offset that growth. Students in the established areas of these boundaries are aging out and not being replaced with new births at the same rate. Economic uncertainty is having an impact on housing affordability, further reducing the amount of students moving into existing homes. Lastly, fewer secondary students come from new housing than elementary students. In this area, every 100 new single family houses generate 15-25 secondary students. Higher density homes generate even fewer (5-10).
